CABIN project supports rice straw-based economy model
The CABIN project has continuously supported the high-quality low emission rice model since its inception in May 2024, and is now establishing a new 5-hectare technical demonstration model at the New Green Farm Cooperative in Thot Not District, Can Tho City for the 2025 winter-spring season. This model aligns with Vietnam’s 1 Million Hectare High-Quality, Low- Emission Rice Program, with sowing conducted on February 14, 2025, and a harvest in May 25th 2025 (90-95 days after sowing).

With technical support from the project, the cooperative has accessed advanced machinery, such as direct seeders and compost turners, to improve efficiency, reduce input costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions while increasing profitability. The model employs low carbon rice cultivation practices, including:
- Certified seeds to ensure quality and resilience.
- Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) for efficient water management.
- Row direct seeding combined with fertilizer deep placement, reducing fertilization frequency to two applications per crop—a 20% reduction compared to conventional broadcasting.
Rice straw-based circular economy with indoor and outdoor mushroom production to enhance sustainability and value addition.
